United Air Care has an "F" rating with Better Business Bureau and it is well deserved. I am writing about the experience of my sickly, 96 year-old widow neighbor with her approval, and because I assisted her in her dealaings with this company. In January 2011 she responded to a special offer from United Air Care for an air-duct cleaning for $35.99. Through gile and misrepresentations they up-sold this lady to a $3,000 duct replacement and asbestos removal! They led her to believe that it is illegal to leave asbestos in her home and that it cannot be sold until the asbestos is removed. She was not advised of the 3 day "change your mind" period, as proven by the lack of her signature on the workorder.

The "Contract" had no title, and the contract-like language is written at the bottom in font too small for most people to read.

Within 2 days a crew appeared and worked in her attic. A workman stepped on a water pipe but didn't tell anyone and within 30 minutes of their departure she had a flood that covered the master bedroom, master bathroom, guest bathroom, and half the hallway. It took 8 weeks for the damage to be repaired and she was living in chaos the whole time.

I called United Air Care at 8:00pm to report the flood. No one was in their office and I left a message. No one from United Air Care ever called about the damage, to inquire as to the lady's well being, and never came to the scene to inspect or repair anything.

Since then, United Air Care's only contacts have been about collecting their money. The widow asked that I call United Air Care because of her health issues, and they have obviously been through this a lot. Their "collector", Yani, just talked over me and reads from a boiler plate speech about why they must be paid, regardless of any damage. Twice I put the call on speaker-phone because he would not let me speak, and I did other things while he ranted for 8 minutes each time. He did not want to let me speak. Because he didn't "win" the conversation, the company now refuses to deal with me in the widoe's behalf.

After the flood, I went on line to research United Air Care and found more than 50 complaints. The pattern seems to be that they prey on the old and vulnerable, do shoddy work, have no customer complaint followup, and refuse to reimburse or finish the job.

Recently the question came up about how United AIr Care disposed of the asbestos they supposedly removed. As part of the flood clean-up another Asbestos abatement company came to remove asbestos ceiling and floor matieral. 3 days after they removed the asbestos they delivered a Hazardous Material Manifest that detailed where the asbestos had been delivered and by what transportation company. United Air Care never provided such documentation. Might they have just dumped it in the bins behind their office?

I strongly recommend against using this company. Not a pleasant experience. In light of the recent "Hansen Report" on duct cleaning companies, the experiene with United Air Care is not unique.
